Algae and pond weeds are different organisms that require different treatments, and the fastest way to tell them apart is texture: algae is slimy or stringy with no distinct leaves or stems, while pond weeds have visible leaves, stems, or roots. Getting this identification right matters because a product built to treat algae often won't touch a rooted weed, and vice versa, which is why so many pond owners treat the same problem twice with two different products before it clears up.
The Three Types of Growth You're Probably Seeing
Algae has no leaves, stems, or roots. It shows up in three common forms:

Should You Treat It, and With What?
Not every patch of growth needs treatment. If it's covering a small area, isn't spreading fast, and your pond still has plenty of open water, it's often fine to leave it alone or handle it with routine maintenance like skimming. Treatment becomes worth it once growth covers a large share of the surface, keeps spreading week over week, or is starting to choke out fish, block pumps, or take over the water you actually want to use.
Once you've decided treatment makes sense, the right product depends on what you identified above:
